So we are back from the most romantic place on earth! Brian and I were in Italy from 10 days and loved every minute, packed as many sights as we could into the 10 days, ate the most fantasic food and drank wine (of course)! Kaitlyn was set up pretty comfy with grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles, although we missed her like crazy - we enjoyed our time alone.
We started the trip in Rome and visited the Vatican museum, The Vatican along with St. Peter's Basilica, had a viewing audience with the Pope - which was amazing (I highly recommend it if you ever travel to Rome and are there on wednesday). We saw what seemed like ALL of Ancient Rome as well as the Castel Santa Angelo - the fortress that used to protect the vatican and the Pope.
We then traveled by train to Florence. Climbed ALL 463 steps to the top of the Duomo, toured the Salvatore Ferragamo (yes, the shoe guy) musuem, saw the Medici Chapel and had one of the best dinners ever at Angiolino's.
We then rented a 4-door SMART car and drove to Dicomano - a little quaint wine town outside of Florence/Tuscany. It was in the Ruffina district which is known for fantastic Chianti. And we tasted and we agreed! We stayed at Il Lago - a small winery that had villas, walking trails, a pool, vineyards (of couse) and olive groves. We spent 2 days here and it was the most relaxing 2 days we have had since Kaitlyn was born - she keeps us busy.
We drove back to Florence to finish our sightseeing which included viewing the Santa Croce - where the tombs of some of the greats are housed - Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Galilelo, and so many more. It was quite interesting. We then headed by train to Venice - our ending point in the journey. We arrived and took a vaparetto (water bus) to our hotel. We then set out to find the best price on a gondola ride - they are very "touristy" but - you have to take one. We found one we could afford and took of down the winidng canals touring the city.
We toured St. Mark's square and climbed the bell tower to view the whole city (there was an elevator - thank goodness!)
It was an amazing, once in a lifetime, dream vacation and I recall events from it everyday!
